International cuisine

While neighbourhood Indian, Italian and Chinese restaurants remain popular, other types of cuisine have made a significant impact on the US restaurant scene, including Japanese, African and Middle Eastern cookery. Most of the US's large towns and cities now offer a broad range of restaurants covering a multitude of culinary themes.

This added choice has encouraged more consumers to dine out regularly; however, it has also raised standards within the sector. Poor restaurants simply cannot survive in a climate of wide choice and good value for money. Consumers are more demanding than ever in terms of quality and price, and plentiful opportunities exist to eat elsewhere if high expectations are not met. Consequently, restaurateurs have become intensely competitive in an effort to attract and retain customers.
